Guest Post on Green Tea for Weight Loss

How Drinking Green Tea Helps with Weight Loss

Green tea presents many benefits to health, especially weight loss. Research has shown that green tea helps a body burn fat and calories at a faster rate, which is why it is often used in diet pills. While green tea does not promote a quick weight loss, it does help a person shed pounds in a slower and safer manner. How the tea works in the body is outlined below.

Fat Reduction
Fats and sugars are turned into triglycerides after entering the body. This synthesis occurs in the liver and small intestine with the resulting triglycerides circulating throughout the body to support different functions. Too many triglycerides result in excess fat, which contributes to obesity. The polyphenols found in green tea trigger an enzyme that breaks down excess triglycerides and lowers the amount of body fat. This results in weight loss for people who consume the tea regularly.

Higher Metabolism
Green tea contains antioxidants such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which can bring on weight loss by speeding up the body's metabolism. Along with caffeine, EGCG assists the central nervous system with pushing fat into the blood where it is used as fuel by the body. Called thermogenesis, this process results in supplemental energy, release of water and fat burning. Caffeine alone can jumpstart thermogenesis, but the EGCG along with other compounds in green tea make it work more effectively.

Better Endurance
It is well-known that exercise along with a healthy, balanced diet brings about weight loss. It works by burning off calories while building up muscle mass, which leads to a higher rate of metabolism. Certain polyphenols in green tea, called catechins, work by stimulating the liver along with cells in muscles to utilize fatty acids. This reduces the rate at which the body uses carbohydrates, allowing for longer periods of exercise and a higher rate of calorie burn in the long term.

Other Considerations
It should be noted that green tea will raise the metabolism by only four percent, which breaks down to about 100 calories per 24 hours. People who need lose a significant amount of weight in a short time will not see any big changes with green tea. The tea is best used for maintaining weight and the other health benefits it provides to the body.

When consumed daily, green tea will help a body be alert, energetic and more efficient. It is an inexpensive and tasty way to stay healthy. Anyone who is considering adding green tea to the diet to promote weight loss should first check with a doctor to make sure it is the right choice and to ensure there are no underlying health issues.

  1. Something that's been on my mind a lot over the past couple of years is the meaning of fasting triglycerides in the context of a low carbohydrate diet. Many, myself included, tend to look at fasting triglycerides and HDL as more important biomarkers and these two both tend to improve rather greatly on a low carbohydrate diet. But I've always wondered if the reduced triglycerides of LC really indicate a "reduced risk" compared to the generally higher fasting triglycerides of healthy people eating a higher carbohydrate diet.

    what are triglycerides ?
