It works by burning off calories while building up muscle mass, which leads to a higher rate of metabolism. Certain polyphenols in green tea, called catechins, work by stimulating the liver along with cells in muscles to utilize fatty acids. This reduces the rate at which the body uses carbohydrates, allowing for longer periods of exercise and a higher rate of calorie burn in the long term.

Other Considerations
It should be noted that green tea will raise the metabolism by only four percent, which breaks down to about 100 calories per 24 hours. People who need lose a significant amount of weight in a short time will not see any big changes with green tea. The tea is best used for maintaining weight and the other health benefits it provides to the body.

When consumed daily, green tea will help a body be alert, energetic and more efficient. It is an inexpensive and tasty way to stay healthy.
